A Portrait of Chamomile

A Portrait of Chamomile

By Christine Platten, VASARA Formulator

Look at the delicate, lacy foliage of German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla/recutita), also known as Blue Chamomile. She is a master healer for women. Behind her fragile looking frame lingers great strength. The word Matricaria comes from the term ‘matrix’, the womb. This Chamomile helps young girls weather problematic cycles, period pains and premenstrual symptoms. Equally, menopausal women find solace in turning to her after completing their childbearing time of life. She is the preferred Chamomile used in skincare, for the treatment of broken capillaries, loss of skin tone and elasticity, dry skin, inflamed skin and much more.

Looking at the plant there is no hint of blueness to be found. During the distillation process however, chamazulene (biochemical component) appears in the most vivid azure/cobalt, turning the oil into a vibrant blue. This distinguishes her from her sister, Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis), who distils in a golden yellow colour, and whose qualities and energies are quite different.

Roman Chamomile is one of the oils for babies, infants and children (and all of these within the adult!). She soothes tantrums, calms and comforts stormy moods and emotions. She counteracts inflammation on all levels; physical, mental and emotional.

Don’t ever underestimate either of the two Chamomiles because they have a gentle appearance. Sure, they nurture with gentleness, but underneath there is a strong soul nature that is capable of being an ally in battle on every woman’s path throughout life.

When we listen to their story with full presence we learn that they happily serve in combination, yielding the healing colour hues of soft emerald green. Experience the exquisite calming properties of Chamomile in our Harmony Duo.
